Practical information.

Argentina, located in the south of the American continent, is the largest Spanish-speaking country on the planet and the second largest in Latin America. The country is bordered by Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia and Chile and by the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The population of Argentina has a rich and diverse native population and has received and receives immigration flows from different countries of Latin America and the rest of the world, a country of open doors built from diversity. Wine and mate are representative of Argentina’s identity.

Cash

The Argentine unit of currency is the peso (AR$).
Notes come in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 10.000 pesos.
There are no coins currently in circulation.

Internet

In most hotels and cafeterias, restaurants and airports there is wi-fi connection, generally good and free of charge.
Free wi-fi will be available at the ICLC venue.

Electricity

In Argentina, the electric current operates at 220 V, 50 Hz. Adapters for plugs are available at most hardware stores.
Most electronic devices (cameras, telephones, computers, etc.) are dual or multiple voltage, but if you bring something that is not (such as a hair dryer), remember to use a voltage converter so as not to cause a short circuit.

Tipping

In restaurants and cafes it is customary to tip 10% of the bill for decent service.
It is also customary to tip hotel staff, bus porters, deliverymen, hotel porters and cab drivers.

Taxes & Refunds

Argentina’s 21% value-added tax is known as the “Impuesto al Valor Agregado” (IVA).
Some stores, identified by ‘Tax Free’ sign in English, offer IVA refunds on Argentine products. Obtain an invoice from the merchant and process with customs upon departing the country.

Banks and shops (opening hours)

Most supermarkets and shops are open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Banks are open from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. except weekends. You can find ATMs around the venue. Many currency exchange offices are located in Florida street.

Climate

In July the climate is cold, with minima of zero degrees Celsius and maximums of 18 degrees Celsius.

Buenos Aires city

Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina, as well as the country’s most populous metropolitan area, with 3,075,646 inhabitants, according to the 2020 census. Along with Mexico City and São Paulo, Buenos Aires is one of the largest metropolises in Latin America, with intense commercial and cultural activity.

It’s fame is linked worldwide to tango and soccer, as well as literature and the arts. As the city grew with the massive immigration of the late 19th century from Europe and the Middle East to South America, it acquired a rich multicultural heritage in all aspects of its fast-paced life, whether in the native variety of the Spanish language or the tasty local cuisine.
In academic terms, Buenos Aires is one of the most important centres of Latin America for higher education. The city is home to nine public universities, six private universities and twenty private colleges, as well as numerous research centers, museums, theaters and a local film industry, welcoming thousands of students, artists and academics from all over the region each year.
The city has two international airports with more than 700 flights a week connecting Buenos Aires to the main cities of the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Pacific area. Just to provide a few examples, there are direct flights to New York City, Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, Mexico City, Panama, Lima, Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and Auckland (New Zealand), as well as all the capital cities of South America. Santiago de Chile, for instance, is 2:20 hours away from Buenos Aires. And connecting in São Paulo, Brazil, there are also flights to destinations such as Istanbul, Dubai, or Johannesburg.
